·Atoll Vegetation and Salinity

چکیده
The great Pacific groups of atolls are such archipelagoes as the Tuamotus, Carolines, Marshalls, Gilberts, the Phoenix-Ellice group, and those scattered clusters and individual islands collectively termed the Pacific Equatorial or Line Islands. The observations forming the basis of this paper were made on visits to all these groups, except the Phoenix-Ellice and Gilberts, as well as to the Austral Islands and to the essentially similar barrier reef islets around various high islands. Atolls are characterized by small floras with few endemic species and a preponderance of widely dispersed strand planes. The plane cover is a strand vegetation which is generally regarded as very uniform and uninteresting. Actually, however, this uniformity exists only in the minds of those who have visited very few

Evidence for the non-influence of salinity variability on the Porites coral Sr / Ca palaeothermometer
Porites coral-based sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions are obtained from the measurement of skeleton Sr /Ca ratio. However, the influence of salinity in the incorporation of these trace elements in the Porites aragonitic skeleton is still poorly documented. Laboratory experiments indicate that in three different coral species (not including the widely used Porites genus), salinity do...
متن کاملEvaluating different spectral indices in identification and preparation of soil salinity mapping of arid region of Iran
Soil salinity undergoes significant spatial and temporal variations; therefore, salinity mapping is difficult, expensive, and time consuming. However, researchers have mainly focused on arid soils (bare) and less attention has been paid to halophyte plants and their role as salinity indicators. Accordingly, this paper aimed to investigate the relationship between soil properties, such as electr...
متن کاملTowards a theory of ecotone resilience: coastal vegetation on a salinity gradient.
Ecotones represent locations where vegetation change is likely to occur as a result of climate and other environmental changes. Using a model of an ecotone vulnerable to such future changes, we estimated the resilience of the ecotone to disturbances. The specific ecotone is that between two different vegetation types, salinity-tolerant and salinity-intolerant, along a gradient in groundwater sa...
متن کاملVegetation and Urbanization on Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands!
The urban and nonurban vegetation on the Micronesian atoll of Majuro is described, including changes in forest canopy, understory shrubs, yards, and cultural features since urbanization began in 1944. Currently, the nonurban areas are covered with Cocos nucifera (coconut) groves mixed with smaller Artocarpus altilis (breadfruit) groves, which were probably established in the late 1800s. Indigen...
متن کاملA Comparative Study on 137 Cs Transfer from Soil to Vegetation in the Marshall Islands
The degree of 137 Cs root uptake into tropical fruits, vegetables and native foliage from coral atoll soils in the Marshall Islands has been quantified using soil-to-plant transfer factors. Transfer factor values for different plants on Bikini Island (Bikini Atoll) range between 0.2 and 144 and, in general, are considerably higher than those observed in continental soils. In this paper we will ...
